How to Change a Cabin Air Filter

The air entering a vehicle through the heating and air conditioning systems is filtered through the cabin air filter. This filter improves the air quality in the cabin by filtering out pollen, mold spores, dust, and other sources of air pollution. Changing this filter regularly helps keep the cabin air quality high.

Look in the owner's manual for the location of the cabin air filter. The easiest filters to change yourself are generally behind the glovebox. It's a messy job, so wear a face mask and gloves.

Here's how to change a cabin air filter in seven easy steps.

  1. Empty the glovebox
  2. Remove the screws holding the glovebox to the dashboard and place them somewhere safe.
  3. Pull the glovebox out.
  4. Carefully remove the filter so debris doesn't fall into the blower motor or all over the cabin.
  5. Vacuum inside the filter housing
  6. Install the new filter following the arrows that show the proper orientation.
  7. Close the housing and reinstall the glovebox.

For most cars, the whole process should only take 15 minutes or so.

How Often Does a Cabin Air Filter Need Changed?

The need to change the cabin air filter depends upon how much and where you drive. Even where you park can affect the cabin filter. Changing the filter seasonally (in the spring and fall) is probably optimal. That way, the defrosters and the air conditioner will be in peak operating condition when you need them most. Indications that the cabin air filter needs changing are reduced airflow, unpleasant odors that linger, and more dust than usual.

Letting the cabin air filter get clogged increases the chances of debris falling into the blower motor while changing the filter. This can result in the need to either clean out the blower motor or even replace it if something as big as a dead mouse or a large twig falls into it. Regular cabin air filter changes can help prevent this from happening.
